Mount Pleasant Group Of Cemeteries – Proposed Visitation Centre

Brian Abbey, president and other members of the Board of Directors of SERRA (South Eglinton Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association) will attend the Community Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, June 12th 2007 at 7:00pm to be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School, 1 – 1/2 Garfield Avenue (south east corner of Garfield and Mount Pleasant) to support the Moore Park Residents’ Association in speaking out against the plan to build a Visitation Centre and Parking Lot at the sensitive Green Space at Moore and Welland.

President Brian will join a select panel of speakers to engage in public discussion and debate against the annexing of green space in our neighbourhood for this specific commercial enterprise. This is an issue that should be of great concern to all residents of south eglinton and surrounding localities, irrespective of their political affiliations. It is important that residents of the community attend this June 12th meeting and make their views known to the guest speakers at the Q and A session that will follow their individual presentations.

Local residents did not want this development in principle and City Council rejected the proposal by a large majority. Green space is sacrosanct to all citizens of Toronto and especially in areas designated park land deficient” but the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) once again ignored the wishes of local citizens and ruled in favour of the developers.

This is definitely not a done deal. We must speak out, make our voice heard and challenge and overturn this ridiculous decision and now is the time to remove the OMB as the final authority for decision making in every Toronto neighbourhood.
